The project started with a design brief from PhD Thomas Visser. In the PhD study the focus lies on social connectedness for elderly. This formed one out of three design briefs; Design an interactive system that makes elderly feel more connected with the focus on presence/availability.

Client expectations

As the client, Thomas Visser expected the creation of an interactive system that makes the users aware of each others presence. The final deliverable should be a working prototype that moves. The product is supposed to be convincible; when using the product it should give the idea that it does make people feel more connected and at least aware of each other presence / availability. Two other important aspects that need to be included in the product as stated by Thomas Visser are elegance and eloquence. Meaning the final deliverable should be powerful yet subtle.

Users and Context research

The main target groups for this project are elderly people and their primary contacts. During the process the focus has been shifted to elderly people and their grand children in particular. This does not mean other contacts of elderly have been ruled out completely. The final product is still suitable for them.

Design anticipations

The vision of the project group is developed during the process. The starting point has been to make a design for elderly people with a focus on the aspects: presence and availability. The intended output of the project was an interactive prototype that indicates presence and availability in a subtle way. It was supposed to make elderly people feel more connected with their contacts without them having to perform a direct action to get in touch.
